I mean, come on, it's impossible not to sing along to "Mackinaw Avenue" or "Change"the latter of which is practically a full-on pop song, though the quality of the writing and musicianship gives it an edge that avoids the overly pristine sheen of lesser (yet more successful) outfits like Danger Danger or Firehouse. Sure, it was shallower than a puddle after a midnight shower on the Sunset Strip, but that was the point: what the hell else do you want from a band with a singer called Steve Sex Summers? Britny Foxs record company (Columbia Records) seemed to agree and unceremoniously dropped Britny Fox, effectively leaving them for dead. But their debut is way more fun: a rough-arsed glam-punk gem that came on like Poison, if Brett Michaels had grown up in Cardiff and spent every Saturday night getting in a fight down Bogiez. They did tend to fall just a tad short with their ballads, but for each of those you've got a counterbalance such as the bluesy vibrato, nasty pinch harmonics, and big chorus of "Clock Strikes." Sure, John Norum is tough to replace, but you could do a whole lot worse than the wonderfully talented Kee Marcello. It now enjoys a cult following among fans of hair. Vixen Vixen (1988) That said, aside from the classic Smooth Up In Ya, BulletBoys has become a largely forgotten record, and the band is rarely mentioned in those generic MTV/VH1 best of the 80s lists. Sure, they were sort of late-stage Hair Metal, but these guys rock hard, so if you see this record, scoop it up. From there, Warner Brothers gave Rough Cutt one last shot, and the group recorded their next record in 1986, called Want You!, which also completely stalled. In hindsight, the decade of glam and glitz was most certainly writhe with bizarre and possibly regrettable fashion choices, but it was also magical. Wake Me When It's Over (1989) Full of sleaze and attitude, one of the better hair metal albums to come out at the tail end of the 80's. Had a minor hit with "House of Pain," but never really went anywhere. "Slave to the Grind" arrived at the time when record label's realized that the audiences were beginning to get tired with over-saturation of glam metal, and received fairly little support and air time as a result. Both Use Your Illusion albums sold like 10 million copies in the first minute after their release. The list is not without some eye brow raising since at least one album achieved gold certification in the United States of America but its a fun list nonetheless. Enter Lorraine Lewis, the frontwoman with an absolutely huge voice, who led the now mostly forgotten group Femme Fatale. Sure, we all know and love Cherry Pie, but Dog Eat Dog is where its at. I loved this kind of music when I was a kid, and I still love it now. Stand by Me, I Cant Wait, Let Go, etc. Wildside did release one more album in 1995 (on an indie label), but had undergone some lineup changes and a complete shift in sound by that pointironically enough taking a stab at the grungier style that had destroyed their initial shot at success. Erotic Suicide - Abusement Park & Perseverance Some good and some bad, which I am OK with, as it comes with the territory of writing, especially when it comes to this topic. Like Hericane Alice, one can only imagine that Wildside would have been an absolutely huge success had their debut hit the streets a few years prioreven more so considering the good fortune that was lining up in their favor prior to the album's release. Europe Out of This World (1988) Less popular and less keyboardy than Slippery, but much better. This album kicks so much ass I had a really hard time selecting which track to highlight above, but the fast-paced energy and raging, bluesy riffing of the album's title track brought it home in the end. Dream Unending: Tide Turns Eternal. Still, damn good sleaze metal. Britny Fox Britny Fox (1988) Maybe even an old T-shirt laying around! The follow-up album "Blood from Stone" was released in 1991. You'll find this album at at least the top five of any hair metal list, and mine is no different. Heavy Pettins debut was the first record produced by Brian May of Queen, and although the sound is just fine, the songwriting is utterly badass. The classic lineup released I'm A Rebel (1980), Breaker (1981), Restless And Wild (1982), Balls To The Wall (1983), Metal Heart (1985), Russian Roulette (1986) and finally Eat The Heat in 1989 which featured American vocalist David Reece and featured a more mainstream sound. Record labels, radio stations, and the mainstream audience themselves all got very tired of this approach and embraced the Seattle underground sound instead, which led to a lot of bands who were all the rage only years before disband and/or become highly irrelevant. Brighton Rock - Love Machine This album gave a huge kick in the ass to the genre when it was spawning hundreds of wanna be's. It did away with the bland glam-like stuff Kiss adopted during the '80s in order to get in line with the mainstream sound of the time, and with powerful tracks such as "Unholy", "Domino", and "Heart of Chrome", it reintroduced the hard rock element in Kiss' sound in a very original and appealing way. They also contributed to two movie soundtracks in '92Bad Channels and Demonic Toysbut by that point it was likely too late for said appearances to give Joker the career kickstart they deserved. Sunset Strip: 10 Underrated Glam & Hair Metal-Era Albums didnt really garner a whole lot of harsh words per se, but I did see a great many surmise that I, Must be a big KISS fan, which is true. Most people will recall this as The record that came out after The Final Countdown, or The record that came out after John Norum left the band. For many reasons, this is a pretty sad state of affairs, as this record is really, honestly nearly as good as The Final Countdown, if not, dare I say itbetter. Thanks for the excellent comment! Warrant Dog Eat Dog (1992) While the era of 80s Hair Metal and Glam is mostly known as being predominantly male, several females infiltrated the scene and staked their claim as well. East Coast glam metal was darker and weirder than its Californian cousin. Oops. While there's a good handful of underrated bands of this ilk that do still get mild exposure here and there, I'm for the most part trying to stick with personal favorites that I've never even encountered on satellite radio channels such as Hair Nation, etc. It's a shockingly awesome record, easily in my all-time Top 10 as far as hair metal goes. I would KILL to reissue the Tuff Luck album too. When you listen to this, you get the feeling that this is the album that David Lee Roth always wanted to make. Its like Dee Snider said, Were Not Gonna Take It, and for Hair-Metalheads, we wouldnt have it any other way. In fact, some of the bands which got jumbled in this unfortunate category released some of their best albums during this decade, and today, we'll be taking a closer look at six such examples. The album that gave "hair" to the hair metal genre. A bit more polished and focused than their debut, which I personally prefer over this one, but this is the album that blew the door open for the entire 80's hair metal genre. Other bands just because I am biased, but from Divebomb - SARGANT FURY, DIMAGE and CASANOVA. An album that is underrated though it would be their next effort, the aptly titled Hooked. Bon Jovi 7800 Fahrenheit (1985) The band itself was formed in 1982, and the original Mk.1 lineup actually featured legendary guitar hero Jake E. Lee, while Lee would leave Rough Cutt in 1983, to join Ozzy Osbourne as a replacement for the recently deceased Randy Rhodes (freak plane crash), soon to sign on were former members of Ratt in Chris Hager (guitar) and Matt Thorr (bass). With Hooked, we see more of the bands Hair Metal stylings, but finally, their Blues Rock roots begin to soak through. That Beau Nasty is kicking my ass right now! 07.
